Stanwood
is located in Mecosta County in northern Michigan's "Big Rapids Area." The small town of Stanwood is primarily an agricultural community, but is near many of northern Michigan's prime recreational areas. There are more than 30 lakes in the region for swimming, sunbathing, boating, fishing, water skiing, camping and picnicking. And the winding Muskegon River is perfect for canoeing, tubing and kayaking. Stanwood is also on the "White Pine Trail State Park," and the city park is a good place to access the Trail. This scenic area has miles and miles of trails for hiking and biking, and northern Michigan is also home to some of the most beautiful golf courses in the state. Stanwood makes a good base from which to explore the antiques and quaint shops and Amish farms that dot the countryside. And the fun doesn't end in summer; there are fall color tours available and in wintertime, Mecosta County has cross country skiing, sledding and snowmobiling opportunities. All year long you can find family style special events near Stanwood, including the Mecosta County Fair in July, the Big Rapids River Days in August, and the Wheatland Music & Arts Fair, usually held Labor Day weekend.

Michigan enjoys four distinct seasons and there is a saying that goes, "if you don't like the weather, wait a day and it will change." This is because the state is nearly surrounded by water, and the climate is influenced both by warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic. The central region of the Lower Peninsula has warm summers with precipitation in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The climate is somewhat influenced by a "lake effect," which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow squalls" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
