Newaygo
is a small town located in the west central portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. As of the 2000 census, the population of Newaygo was 1,670 residents. The town is quite rural in nature and is part of Newaygo County, situated at the junction of Michigan State Route 37 and State Route 82 on the Muskegon River (which flows through the north side of town.) The town's recorded history dates back to the mid 1700s when French explorers and trappers came up the Muskegon River and later the town flourished during the lumber boom due to its convenient location on the Muskegon River, which was a major route for floating lumber. The town's interesting name comes from Chief Naw-wa-goo, who signed the Treaty of Saginaw in 1812. Today, the Muskegon River is the main attraction for visitors - especially for fishing steelhead in the spring and salmon in the fall. Also, over half of Newaygo County is within the Manistee National Forest which also offers sightseeing, hiking, biking, hunting, camping and RV'ing. The charming hometown atmosphere of the community of Newaygo is supported mainly by tourism with some small businesses and a few manufacturing facilities. The city of Grand Rapids, Michigan is a little less than an hour's drive from Newaygo.

Central Michigan , on the Lower Peninsula, has four distinct seasons, with weather that can be quite variable. This is because the state is nearly surrounded by water, and the climate is influenced both by warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic. The central region of the Lower Peninsula has warm summers with precipitation in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The climate is somewhat influenced by a lake effect, which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as snow squalls. Autumn is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
