Bitely
is an unincorporated community located in Newaygo County within the Manistee National Forest in the northern portion of Michigans Lower Peninsula. Altogether, over half of Newaygo County is situated within the Manistee National Forest. Bitely is in Lilley Township, about one mile west of M-37 and, at one time, it was a station on the Chicago & Western Michigan Railroad. The community was given a post office in 1889 and was named for Steven Bitely, who owned a sawmill in the village. The small town of Bitely is near several lakes, including Isaac Lake, Lamoreaux Lake and Bitely Lake. The nearby Muskegon River is another main attraction for visitors and is especially noted for its steelhead fishing in the spring and salmon fishing in the fall. Autumn is one of the most popular times to visit Bitely to view the spectacular brilliant colors of the changing leaves. The Manistee National Forest, which encompasses almost one million acres of public land and receives approximately four million visitors each year, offers hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, a scenic byway and campgrounds. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are available in the wintertime. Other attractions near Bitely include the Lumbermans Monument, which sits on a bluff overlooking the Au Sable River in the Manistee National Forest.

Michigan enjoys four distinct seasons and there is a saying that goes, "wait a day and the weather will change," which is a pretty good description of the weather in the Great Lakes region. This is because the climate is influenced both by warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic. The west-central region of the Lower Peninsula has warm summers with precipitation in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Located near the shores of Lake Michigan, the climate is influenced by the lake effect, which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow belts" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
