Canadian-Lakes
is located in Lower Michigan, approximately two and half-hours from Detroit, near the town of Mecosta. This is known as Michigan's "Big Rapids" region. Due to its central location between many of the state's major lakes, marshes, streams and the Muskegon River, the area is perfect for canoeing, tubing and kayaking, swimming, fishing and boating. The beautiful rolling hills and hardwood forests, creeks and wetlands of the Canadian Lakes region makes for an unforgettable vacation experience. There are numerous golf courses in the area, hiking trails, horseback riding and an abundance of campgrounds near Canadian Lakes, both primitive and modern. Other attractions include autumn color tours, and snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, sledding and ice skating in wintertime. The nearby town of Mecosta holds a number of special events and festivals throughout the year, including a 4th of July Freedom Festival, Big Rapids River Days in August, and an annual Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival. Gaming is also available year round near Canadian Lakes at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Spa.

Michigan enjoys four distinct seasons and there is a saying that goes, "if you don't like the weather, wait a day and it will change." This is because the state is nearly surrounded by water, and the climate is influenced both by warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic. The central region of the Lower Peninsula has warm summers with precipitation in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The climate is somewhat influenced by a "lake effect," which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow squalls" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
