Wolverine
is a small town located along highway 41, north of the town of Houghton on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which is situated on the northwestern end of Upper Michigan. This area is called Michigan's "Northern-Most" experience, a place rich in history, pristine wilderness and abundant recreational opportunities. Surrounded on three sides by Lake Superior, which is the largest fresh-water lake in the world, the Keweenaw Peninsula offers everything from art galleries to shipwrecks. Outdoor recreation is a way of life in Wolverine, with hiking, biking, fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking, rock hunting, camping - the list goes on and on. The Wolverine area receives an average of 180 inches of snowfall each year, making it superb for snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing. Also known as "Copper Country," the Keweenaw Peninsula was, at one time, the site of the largest copper mines in the country. The Coppertown USA Mining Museum is open late May through October and tells the fascinating story of "America's first mining boom." Many of the communities surrounding Wolverine celebrate their heritage and natural resources with festivals, eco-tours and museums. Just a few of the other many attractions in the area include Isle Royale National Park, one of America's only island national parks, the Keweenaw National Historic Park and the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum in Houghton.

The Keweenaw Peninsula on Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a rugged wilderness area where severe winters are commonplace. The climate is greatly influenced by Lake Superior, as well as cold, dry air coming from the Arctic region. The Lake acts as a giant humidifier, increasing the moisture content of the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses when it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfall in some areas. The shores of Lake Superior are prone to this "lake effect" snow and have recorded up to 350 inches of snow in a single year. However, average snowfall for this area is 177 days per year. In summer, the lake breezes have a cooling effect on the climate, keeping it from becoming too hot and uncomfortable. Summer humidity is rarely a problem due to the cooler temperatures.
