Houghton
is located in the center of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Northern Michigan near Portage Lake and Lake Superior. This is Michigan's copper country, a region of deep forests, steep terrain, numerous inland lakes and streams and small villages. The Porcupine Mountains and Lake Superior, giving it a rare, almost mystical quality, dominate this region. Outdoor recreation is key to the area, with hiking and fishing being among the most popular sports. Houghton also receives an average of 180 inches of snowfall per year, making it as appealing in winter as in summer. You can go hiking, biking, swimming, fishing and boating, cross country skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling. Although small, with a population of 7,500, Houghton is the largest city and economic center for the copper country. Highlights in the area include Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Coppertown U.S.A.; the Delaware Copper Mine Tour, Fort Wilkins State Park, the Seaman Mineral Museum and the Hanka Homestead Museum. And after a mountain hike, nothing beats ending the day watching the sun set beyond the mountains from the Lake of the Clouds Scenic Overlook.

The Keweenaw Peninsula on Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a rugged wilderness area where severe winters are commonplace. The climate is greatly influenced by Lake Superior, as well as cold, dry air coming from the Arctic region. The Lake acts as a giant humidifier, increasing the moisture content of the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses when it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfall in some areas. The shores of Lake Superior are prone to this "lake effect" snow and have recorded up to 350 inches of snow in a single year. However, average snowfall for this area is 177 days per year. In summer, the lake breezes have a cooling effect on the climate, keeping it from becoming too hot and uncomfortable. Summer humidity is rarely a problem due to the cooler temperatures.
