Calumet
is situated in the Upper Peninsula region of northern Michigan, a central point in what is known as "Copper Country." At one time, this area was home to the richest copper mine in the world, the Calumet and Hecla, which closed in 1939. The whole town was shaped around the mines and became the home of most of the officers and employees of the mines. Today, the entire downtown section of Calumet (which is the French word for "pipe") is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and contains many beautiful sandstone buildings of the mining era. The Coppertown USA Museum and Visitor Center is located in Calumet and tells the stories of the mines and surrounding communities. The village of Calumet is just three miles from Lake Superior and offers hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, and golf, hunting for agates, kayaking and picnicking. During the winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are available in the area and downhill skiing is available at Mt. Bohemia. Other nearby attractions include tours of the Arcadian and Delaware Copper Mines, historical lighthouses, a national underwater preserve, several waterfalls and shopping and dining in the Houghton-Hancock area.

Calumet Weather & Climate

The Keweenaw Peninsula on Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a rugged wilderness area where severe winters are commonplace. The climate is greatly influenced by Lake Superior, as well as cold, dry air coming from the Arctic region. The Lake acts as a giant humidifier, increasing the moisture content of the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses when it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfall in some areas. The shores of Lake Superior are prone to this "lake effect" snow and have recorded up to 350 inches of snow in a single year. However, average snowfall for this area is 177 days per year. In summer, the lake breezes have a cooling effect on the climate, keeping it from becoming too hot and uncomfortable. Summer humidity is rarely a problem due to the cooler temperatures.
