Onekama
is a tiny village rich in history located along US Highway 31 near Portage Lake and a quarter of a mile from the Lake Michigan shoreline. The town of Onekama is an old resort area along Portage Lake with a lovely park, marina, restaurants and shops. The history of the area is evident in the many Victorian cottages in the village, and the historic Portage Point Inn on the north side of the lake. Portage Lake is the largest lake in Manistee County, with 2500 acres of water, and very popular for fishing and boating. Other things to do in the area include swimming, sunning on the beach, kayaking, camping, biking, golf and wave running. The Manistee National Forest has over 87,000 acres with miles and miles of hiking trails. And other good spots for a hike include nearby Magoon Creek Natural Area, Orchard Beach State Park and the Manistee County National Forest. If you're seeking something a little more exciting, there are several nearby casinos in Manistee, South Petroskey and Traverse City. Onekama is also home to the annual "Onekama Days," usually held in late July and featuring an arts & crafts fair, old-fashioned bake sale, parade, entertainment and auto show. There are many other fairs and festivals in the surrounding area throughout the summer months.

Onekama Weather & Climate

The lake effect is quite strong on the northwest area of Lower Michigan near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This area has a distinct four-season climate, although Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer, and warmer during late fall and winter. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September, receiving an average of 17.45 inches of rain during that time. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from season to season.
