Frankfort
lies on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in northwest lower Michigan. The town of Frankfort and the community of Elberta together encompass the historic sailing harbor of Betsie Bay.This area has some of the most beautiful scenery in Michigan, with sandy beaches, sparkling lake and beautifully maintained coastline. Frankfort has seven full service marinas with over 400 boat slips, and the fishing and boating are superb. Fishing charters are available for Lake Michigan, and "driftboat" river charters are available on the Betsie, Platte and Manistee Rivers. Other nearby activities includes swimming, hiking, and golf, cross-country and downhill skiing. The beautiful tree lined streets of Frankfort are filled with unique shops and restaurants and several marinas are within walking distance of downtown. Frankfort is also considered the gateway to the "Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore." In Autumn there are special Fall color tours of the surrounding hills and valleys, and there are numerous festivals and special events throughout the year. The peaceful Lake Michigan port town of Frankfort is an undiscovered gem where you can be as active as you wish, or just relax and enjoy the views.

The lake effect is quite strong on the northwest area of Lower Michigan near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This area has a distinct four-season climate, although Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer, and warmer during late fall and winter. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September, receiving an average of 17.45 inches of rain during that time. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from season to season.
