Sand-Lake
is a small town of less than 1,000 residents, located in southwestern Lower Michigan. Named for the sandy-bottomed lake on the west side of town, Sand Lake sits on the northeastern border of Kent County, with a small section of the town in Montcalm County. It is primarily a tourist community with an appealing, small-town atmosphere. The Kent County area has a rich cultural heritage, several colleges and museums and sports arenas. Kent County also has the distinction of being the home of Gerald R. Ford, the 38th President of the United States. Sand Lake appeals to nature and outdoor recreation enthusiasts because of its' close proximity to the Huron-Manistee National Forest, Ludington State Park and Lake Michigan. Activities in the area include swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, and snowmobiling and cross country skiing. The Manistee National Forest is the only national forest with an ATV trail system in western Lower Michigan, and it connects with an additional 180 miles of off-road vehicle trails east of Highway 37. The national forest also contains thousands of lakes and miles of sparkling rivers, including the well-known Au Sable and Pere Marquette River. Other attractions to see in the Sand Lake area include Historic White Pine Village and the Big Sable Point Lighthouse.

Sand Lake Weather & Climate

Michigan enjoys four distinct seasons and there is a saying that goes, "wait a day and the weather will change," which is a pretty good description of the weather in the Great Lakes region. This is because the climate is influenced both by warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic. The west-central region of the Lower Peninsula has warm summers with precipitation in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Located near the shores of Lake Michigan, the climate is influenced by the lake effect, which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow belts" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
