Lewiston
is nestled in the gorgeous woodlands of northern Michigan near McCormick Lake and Twin Lake. More than 40 other lakes in all are in the surrounding area and most have public access. Outdoor recreation is unlimited and includes swimming, canoeing, hiking and biking, horseback riding, camping, and ice fishing and snowmobiling in wintertime. With access to so many lakes, boating and fishing are naturally very popular around Lewiston. The lakes are stocked with a variety of panfish, northern pike, bass and walleye. Lewiston is also located just five miles from a beautiful golf course offering 72 challenging holes of golf on four extraordinary courses. And, for winter enthusiasts, downhill skiing is just twenty miles away. There are several fun special events in Lewiston throughout the year, including the Snowmobile Drag Races World Series in February, Mushroom Festival and Classic Car Show usually held in May and June. Lewiston has family style hotels; motels and cabins, restaurants and small businesses that welcome tourists. This "Little Town in the Woods," is located approximately 185 miles north of Detroit, and 75 miles south of the Mackinaw Bridge.

The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan's four seasons of weather. What is known as "lake effect snow squalls" bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan in winter, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October. Michigan is located on the northeast fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but has a lower occurrence of them, in part, as a result of the colder water of Lake Michigan during the spring and early summer months.
