Higgins-Lake
is a 10,000-acre lake located in northern Michigan, just three hours north of Detroit and ninety minutes south of the Mackinac Island Bridge. It has been named the "sixth most beautiful lake in the world," and along with the nearby village of Roscommon has become a popular four season recreational area. The crystal clear water of Higgins Lake attracts visitors for swimming and boating, sunbathing, canoeing and kayaking and scuba diving. Trout and perch fishing are excellent in the lake and boat rentals are available for day use. There are endless trails surrounding Higgins Lake for hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in wintertime. And two state parks in the area offer even more hiking, camping and picnic facilities. Lodging such as motels, hotels and cottages is abundant in the Higgins Lake region, and the village of Roscommon offers a variety of shopping and restaurants. One of the most beautiful places to visit near Higgins Lake is the George Mason River Retreat, also known as the Mason Tract. This wilderness area is open to the public for fishing, boating and hunting, and overnight camping is permitted at Canoe Harbor Campground.

The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan's weather. What is known as "lake effect snow squalls" bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The Lakes also modify summer high temperatures, making the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Summer temperatures are typically in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with cool nights. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October.
