Grayling
is the county seat for Crawford County, which is located in northern Michigan east of Grand Traverse Bay and near Lake Margrethe. The picturesque Au Sable River winds its way through the town of Grayling, making it a popular place for outdoor recreational enthusiasts. Hunting, fishing, canoeing and boating are all popular sports, and miles and miles of trails for hiking, snowmobiling, biking and horseback riding surround the town of Grayling. The village of Grayling is also the starting point for the annual Au Sable River Run, a popular non-stop canoe race that ends in the waters of Lake Huron. Grayling is also the site of a legendary trout hatchery, which is open for tours seven days a week during the season. Other attractions in the area include the Hartwick Pines State Park, which contains some of the oldest trees in Michigan, and Camp Grayling, which is the largest National Guard base in north central U.S. There are many private and state campgrounds located around Grayling, and other lodging includes historic bed & breakfasts, hotels, motels and country lodges and cabins.

The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan's weather. What is known as "lake effect snow squalls" bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The Lakes also modify summer high temperatures, making the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Summer temperatures are typically in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with cool nights. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October.
