Comins is a small township in Oscoda County, Michigan that is located in the Central-Northeast portion of the state's Lower Peninsula. It is approximately 50 miles north of Interstate 75 near the AuSable River. This sparsely populated county does not have any officially organized villages or cities - just lots of undisturbed wilderness, including the Huron National Forest and the Oscoda State Forest (over half of the county is in the national forest and one quarter in the state forest.) There are lots of ATV trails and hiking, snowmobile and cross-country ski trails near Comins. The AuSable River runs through the area and the Cedar Valley Golf Course is nearby. This is definitely a relaxing, off the beaten track area - perfect for those looking for some quality "down" time. Other activities in the area include fly fishing and swimming, boating, canoeing and kayaking, fall color tours, ice fishing and sledding. An interesting note for birding fans - Oscoda County is home to the Kirtland Warbler, found nowhere else in the world except the Bahamas during winter migration.

Comins Weather & Climate

The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan's four seasons of weather. What is known as "lake effect snow squalls" bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan in winter, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October. Michigan is located on the northeast fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but has a lower occurrence of them, in part, as a result of the colder water of Lake Michigan during the spring and early summer months.
