Hubbard-Lake
is Michigan's second largest inland lake, and has become a prime resort area and retirement spot. It is located in northeast Michigan and covers 8,800 acres, spanning three townships. This beautiful spring-fed lake is stocked with bass, perch, pike, trout and walleye and is a popular destination for anglers. A lovely golf club is located on the southeast edge of the lake, and several motels, cabins and cottages surround the area. Several nice restaurants and resorts are a short drive away, and the small town of Hubbard Lake is one mile north of the lake and caters to tourists. Mt. Maria, on the south shore of Hubbard Lake, was listed by National Geographic as one of the ten most beautiful lake views in the country. At the top of Mt. Maria is the site of the Austin Backus Memorial. The Mt. Maria Lodge, at the bottom of the hill, is home to Hubbard Lakes most extensive museum of local history, with hundreds of photos of the early residents of this area. Hubbard Lake is located among the forests and hills of Alcona County, with excellent roads that connect all sections of the lake. This makes it perfect for a fall color auto tour. Wintertime on the lake is equally as beautiful, with ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing nearby.

The West Central Portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, near Wilson State Park, experiences four distinct seasons. There is a saying for the region that goes "if you don't like the weather, wait a day and it will change." This is true because the area is influenced by both the cold, dry air coming down from the Arctic, and the warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico. Summers are generally warm and humid, but not unbearably so, and winters are cold and snowy. Nearer the shoreline, lake effect breezes help moderate the temperatures in the summer and moisture laden air coming off the lake in the winter creates heavy snowfalls in some areas. Spring can be a mixed bag of cool temperatures and snow, or mild with periods of rain and thunderstorms. Fall is often the sunniest, driest time of the year in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
