Rothbury
is a small town located on the Lake Michigan shoreline in Oceana County. It is situated about halfway up the states Lower Peninsula on the western side. The town was established in 1865 as a stop on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Today, Rothbury primarily serves as a "bedroom" community for nearby Muskegon, which is only twelve miles to the south. A large iron foundry is located on the east side of town and tourism also plays a big role in the areas economy. Oceana County is known as the "asparagus capital of the world," and also has the second largest fruit tree acreage in the state of Michigan. Outdoor recreational opportunities abound near Rothbury, from canoeing and kayaking on the White River to hiking in the Manistee National Forest to fishing on Lake Michigan, Hart Lake, or any of the other many lakes of the region. Other nearby attractions include the Sand Dunes of Silver Lake, which are one of the few places in the country that offers dune schooner rides. Michigans first Rails-to-Trails State Park runs through Oceana County, and it is also home to the Little Point Sable Lighthouse, built in 1874. If shopping and dining are your idea of a vacation, Rothbury has both, as do the many other small towns and villages of the Oceana County/Lake Michigan region.

West-Southwest Michigan on the Lower Peninsula has four seasons where summers are warm with cool nights and winters are cold with snow. Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer and warmer during late fall and winter than in other parts of the Midwest. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from winter to winter.
