Delton
is located in the southwest region of the state, northwest of Kalamazoo near Wall and Fair Lakes, with several other lakes located in the near vicinity. Of those, the most well known is the Upper and Lower Crooked Lakes, known for their excellent fishing for bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass and perch. The town of Delton has quite a few interesting attractions for tourists. The Bernard Historical Museum includes a Country Store, Seamstress Cottage, Blacksmith Shop, and a nature trail and herb & wildflower garden. Other points of interest in Delton includes the Charlton Park Village Museum, which includes 17 historical buildings, and the Gilmore Car Museum, which houses over 130 antique, classic and collector cars on display in six historic barns. This museum was named one of the country's "10 best large automobile museums." Also, located just two miles north of Yankee Springs State Park at Gun Lake is the Historic Bowens Mills. This 13-acre pioneer park contains an 1864 cider mill and gristmill that still grinds and sells fresh corn meal through the use of water-powered millstones. The lovely town of Delton has shopping, restaurants and plentiful lodging and makes a good base for anyone exploring the west-southwest region of Michigan.

Delton Weather & Climate

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
