Black-Lake is located in Cheboygan County in the northern region of Michigans Lower Peninsula. This 10,000-acre lake is six miles long and over 3 miles wide, and Onaway State Park encompasses 158 acres of land that runs along the southeast shore of the lake. The park contains picturesque cobblestone beaches, unique rock formations and a variety of trees and wildlife. You will find several miles of nature trails in the park for hiking, and Black Lake is well known for their fishing and boating. The lake supports a variety of game fish, including walleyes, yellow perch, small and largemouth bass, northern pike, sturgeon, rock bass and brook trout. Every February, Black Lake hosts the annual Sturgeon Shivaree, a festival that features ice fishing and snowmobile racing. Camping is permitted at the lake where you'll find 100 campsites with electric hook-ups and firepits. There are also a variety of natural attractions and historic attractions located not far from the park. The highest waterfalls in lower Michigan are only 10 miles east of the park, and 15 miles south are a variety of natural sinkholes. The park is approximately 45 miles from the Old Mill Creek Saw Mill and Fort Michilimackinac, a completely restored 1700s community, and Mackinaw Island.

Black Lake Weather & Climate

Michigan is comprised of two peninsulas - referred to as "Upper" and "Lower" Michigan. Northeast Lower Michigan experiences four distinct seasons. During periods of easterly to northeasterly winds, the air moving over Lake Huron gives this region cooler summers and increased snow activity in late fall and early winter. As a result of prevailing westerly winds, the northeast region also experiences additional lake affect. In late winter, ice builds up on the lakes and temperature variations more closely resemble inland Michigan. This area seldom experiences prolonged periods of hot, humid weather in the summer or extreme cold during the winter. Annually, thunderstorms occur on an average of 24 days per year - mainly on summer afternoons. Michigan is located on the northeast fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but has a lower occurrence of them, in part, as a result of the colder water of Lake Michigan during the spring and early summer months.
